The New York Times has entered a multi-year agreement with Amazon, licensing its news, cooking, and sports content for integration into Alexa and Amazon’s AI training models. This marks the newspaper’s first AI-focused licensing deal, even as it pursues legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged unauthorized use of its content.

Financial terms remain undisclosed, but the deal underscores Amazon’s aggressive push into AI, including the expansion of Alexa+. Content from NYT Cooking and The Athletic will be used to train foundation models and generate real-time summaries on Amazon devices.

"This aligns with our strategy to ensure our work is properly valued, whether through commercial partnerships or intellectual property enforcement," said NYT CEO Meredith Kopit Levien. The MOVE highlights the growing tension between media rights holders and AI developers scrambling for training data.
